Most North American ski areas will be closing after this weekend or the one after (Easter) but it is still snowing across the continent.

As with Europe, conditions are best up top, whilst resorts report a foot of snow on higher slopes, some are having to close their lower slopes as snow thaws away.

In Canada ski areas on both east and west coasts have reported around 20-30cm of snow in the last seven days and bases remain very good higher up, most with 2m or more for their final weeks.

It’s similar in the US with Breckenridge in Colorado reporting 60cm/2 feet of new snow this week, Killington on the east 35cm.  Alyeska in Alaska though has posted by far the biggest snowfall – 1.8m/6 feet – in the past week, more than anywhere else in the world.

Although many resorts will be closing others will stay open in to May including Sunshine and Whistler in Canada and Araphoe Basin, Snowbird, Mammoth and Squaw in the US

Big snow storms are also being forecast for the next few days in California (up to 5 feet/1.5 metres of snow ion the most optimistic forecasts) and on the east coast too.
