April is the month when Austrian ski areas divide in to high and low, with the lowest quarter or so o ski areas, include those in the large Skiwelt region, having already called it a day on this ski season and closed on Sunday at the end of the ski day.

By contrast higher ski areas will stay open in to May in some cases and indeed by June there’ll be more Austrian areas open than any other European country, thanks to the country’s eight glacier destinations.
For the time being though the good news at some still-open Austrian ski areas has been fresh snow this week. Ischgl, one of those open to May, had the most with 30cm of fresh snow, but several others reported 10-25cm of fresh snowfall themselves including Obergurgl, the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier (pictured above) – which is open to late July and the year-round Hintertux glacier.
Bases on the glaciers are mostly up at 2m+ but at non-glacier resorts there’s an end-of-season feeling with thin cover, if anything, at the base of the slopes and in most cases spring snow lying 50-100cm thick on higher runs.
