An adventure wedding photographer says she believes the demand for snow weddings has risen by half after a heavy snowfall in the UK last spring.

The heavy snow in the UK back in February and March earlier this year may have brought a delightful surprise for school children across the country, but it was a little more confusing for the hundreds of couples with weddings planned caught up in the blanket of snow across the UK. So much so that the media spotlight fell on bridal couples who had to suddenly change their Spring theme to a winter wonderland.

Despite the chaos, the following pictures of snow scenes and winter warmers seems to have sparked a desire in the UK wedding community, as some wedding suppliers report increases of up to 50% on winter themed nuptials.

Traditionally, the most popular times of year to get married remains June to September, as the UK weather cannot be relied upon. However, March is becoming more popular, mainly due to the change in seasons and the two-week reprieve of the Easter holidays for taking honeymoons and such like.

For Adventure Wedding Photographer Cat Ekkleboom-White, March is popular for another reason. She takes pictures of couples in the snow at ski-resorts across Europe, and March is the perfect time for snow to still be on the ground, but for the weather to be a little less frosty!

Remarkably, Cat has seen a 50% uptake in the number of winter weddings for the 2019 season.

“My destination weddings are on the rise but most predominantly is the rise of winter weddings, where people want to get married in the snow,” said Cat, adding, “I do definitely feel that winter weddings becoming more popular, much more than in previous years. March is still the most sought-after month as there is still snow on the mountain yet the weather is warmer in general.”

I’m finding that the Austrian Alps are the most popular destination for winter weddings, with legendary ski resorts such as Kitzbühel, St Anton, Zell Am See and Mayrhofen top choices for couples looking to say their vows in the snow then hit the slopes on their wedding day.”

Certainly, top UK wedding websites are full of winter ideas. From a stand with hot drinks and coats to ‘warm the guests up’ to companies who are able to provide ‘fake’ snow for when the weather doesn’t want to collaborate.

A poll on Cat’s Instagram account seemed to confirm it, with 62% of Brides confirming they would be interested in a winter wonderland scene for their wedding, compared to 38% who would be more inclined to get married on a beach.

With the average cost of a UK wedding now £27,000, it’s perhaps not surprising that some couples  are looking abroad not just for the perfect day, but for the perfect pictures as well.
