Heavy Snow in Western North America

The last few days of summer (which ended at midnight) saw heavy snowfall in western North America.

Ski areas in Alberta reported up to 35cm (14 inches) of snow in 24 hours (Marmot Basin pictured above) and snow was also reported in Utah, Colorado and as far south as Mammoth in California.

The snow is still falling in many areas as we start the autumn.

Ski resorts in Colorado, which include some of the highest in the world, and around Banff in Alberta, tend to start their seasons in late October or early November.

Here’s Squaw Valley:

The Timberline ski area on Mt Hood in Oregon also opens in early autumn and normally maintains a 10 month season through to the following summer on its permanent snow field.

Mammoth Mountain only ended its epic 2016-17 season last month but got a white covering yesterday, snow is forecast to continue there today (Friday 22 September) but the resort isn’t set to open until 9 November – in just under 50 days’ time.
