Plans to build a new ski resort in Romania’s Fagaras mountains have been announced by the country’s Tourism Ministry.
The project is included amongst a number of proposals listed in a new Tourism Master Plan just approved by the Romanian government meeting.
The Fagaras Mountains, named by Emmanuel de Martonne in 1907 “The Transylvanian Alps” are part of the Southern Carpathians and reach a height of 2544m.
So far there’s limited information about the project but Romania’s Minister for Tourism Mircea Dobre told local media that the project’s origins actually date back nearly 50 years to 1968.
He said the location chosen could provide a ski area with 150km of ski slopes and has a very snowsure reputation with snow normally lying for more than eight months a year.
The resort development was, “… one of my personal dreams,” he said.
Romania currently has around 40 ski areas although most are small with one or two elderly drag lifts and their operational status unknown. The largest ski areas has around 40km of slopes.
