Courchevel will open its latest five-star hotel this winter, the Hotel Barriere Les Neiges.
This new property take’s the famous French resort’s tally of luxury hotels to 21, 18 of them rated five star, three the higher ‘palace’ level.
Comparing five star hotels from resort to resort and country to country can be difficult. France had no five-star hotels until 2009, prior to that the country’s highest category was four star. Courchevel has the second most five star hotels in the country, behind capital Paris with more than 70.
However resorts famed for their luxury accommodation such as Crans Montana, Gstaad or St Moritz in Switzerland still only have a handful of five star hotels, mostly established for a century or more.
Hotels in Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland agreed a common hotel star rating in 2009.
The Hotel Barriere Les Neiges, which is due to open in December, will be in a ski-in, ski-out location at the foot of the Bellecote run.
It will have 42 luxury rooms and suites spread across 7 floors, a 1000 m2 Spa Diane Barrière (the largest in Courchevel), a cinema room, a ski room at the foot of the slopes, Le Studio by Petit VIP, two restaurants, an indoor bar and a large terrace on the slopes.
