The former Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher has been seriously injured in a skiing accident in the 3 Valleys on Sunday.
The 44 year old German, who retired from motor racing last year after winning the world championship seven times was skiing off piste.
Schumacher is reported to have fallen and hit his head on a rock when skiing between two pistes, he was wearing a helmet, no one else was involved in the accident although others were skiing with him.
Ski patrol requested Schumacher be airlifted by helicopter to the nearby hospital in Moutiers from where he was later moved to Grenoble.
His injuries were initially said to be serious but not life threatening, however it was later reported he underwent brain surgery upon arrival at Grenoble and is now in a coma with his condition now reported as ‘critical.’
