Les Gets is a traditional Savoyard village with a relaxed charm, a strong family focus, and access to one of the world’s largest ski areas. Situated at 1,172 m in the Haute-Savoie, between Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, it forms part of the Portes du Soleil — a vast Franco-Swiss domain with 600 km of pistes and 12 interconnected resorts.

What makes Les Gets special is its authentic village atmosphere. Unlike some purpose-built French resorts, Les Gets is a real alpine community, with wooden chalets, a weekly market, and a lively town square that feels lived-in rather than manufactured. It has the Famille Plus label, underlining its excellent facilities for families, yet it’s equally appealing for skiers who want a quieter, more characterful base with full access to the Portes du Soleil.

Add in its easy access — just over an hour from Geneva Airport — and you have one of the most convenient and welcoming gateways to big skiing in the Alps.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Les Gets’ slopes are directly linked with Morzine, giving access to a shared area of about 120 km, while the full Portes du Soleil opens up the complete 600 km circuit, stretching into Switzerland.

  • Beginners: Gentle nursery slopes close to the village, plus wide greens and blues on the Chavannes side, make Les Gets ideal for first-timers. The resort has excellent ski schools and dedicated beginner zones.
  • Intermediates: This is prime territory for intermediates, with long, rolling runs through forests and pastures. Popular descents include the blues from Ranfoilly and the reds from La Rosta. The link into Morzine adds mileage and variety.
  • Experts: While Les Gets itself doesn’t have the steepest terrain, the full Portes du Soleil offers black runs and freeride potential in nearby Avoriaz and Champery. Locally, the Mont Chéry sector has challenging reds, blacks, and off-piste that experts will appreciate.
  • Freestylers: Les Gets has a snowpark and boardercross on Mont Chéry, while Avoriaz nearby is one of Europe’s freestyle capitals.

A real highlight is Mont Chéry, sitting opposite the main Chavannes slopes. Quieter and often less crowded, it offers superb views of Mont Blanc and excellent red and black runs, plus hidden off-piste. It’s a favourite for locals and advanced skiers who want to escape the main crowds.

Resort & Infrastructure

Les Gets is compact, charming, and easy to get around. The main lift hub at Chavannes rises directly from the village centre, giving instant access to wide, family-friendly slopes. The opposite Mont Chéry area is reached by its own gondola, offering more challenging skiing and panoramic views.

The lift system is modern and efficient, with gondolas, high-speed chairs, and extensive snowmaking ensuring good coverage. While the village is at a modest altitude, north-facing slopes and links to higher areas in Morzine and Avoriaz ensure good snow reliability throughout the season.

The resort’s infrastructure is very family-focused: ski kindergartens, beginner areas, and leisure facilities make it easy for parents and children to enjoy the slopes together.

Accommodation

Les Gets has stayed true to its chalet roots, with accommodation dominated by traditional wood-and-stone buildings.

  • Budget: Self-catered apartments and B&Bs.
  • Mid-Range: Family-run hotels and chalet-hotels close to the slopes.
  • Luxury: Boutique chalets and hotels such as Hotel Spa La Marmotte, offering spa facilities and ski-in/ski-out access.

You can browse options via the official Les Gets accommodation search. The overall feel is welcoming and authentic, with a strong emphasis on hospitality.

Dining & Après

Les Gets is well-known for its food culture. On the slopes, rustic chalets serve Savoyard classics like tartiflette, fondue, and raclette. Local farm restaurants are a highlight, often using produce from the surrounding pastures.

In the village, dining ranges from pizzerias and brasseries to fine dining. La Pela is renowned for its Savoyard specialities, while Vina Annapurna offers a more contemporary twist.

Après-ski is lively but not rowdy. Bar Bush and Le Pub Irlandais are popular gathering spots, while Black Bear and wine bars add sophistication. The atmosphere is friendly and sociable, reflecting the family-oriented nature of the resort.

Non-Skiing Activities

Les Gets offers a wide range of off-slope activities, making it a genuine four-season village.

  • The Les Gets ice rink in the village centre.
  • Sledging areas and children’s play zones.
  • Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails.
  • Wellness and spa facilities, including those at La Marmotte.
  • The unique Mechanical Music Museum, showcasing the village’s cultural heritage.
  • Weekly markets and events celebrating local food and traditions.

Village Character & Access

Les Gets is a traditional alpine village, not a purpose-built resort. Its wooden chalets, church square, and weekly market give it a lived-in feel. Families and French holidaymakers form the core of its clientele, giving it a more local and authentic vibe than neighbouring Avoriaz or Morzine.

How to get there from the UK:

  • By air: Geneva Airport is just over 1 hr away.
  • By train: Eurostar/TGV to Cluses or Thonon-les-Bains, then transfer (30–40 mins).
  • By car: Around 8 hrs 30 mins from Calais, motorway access most of the way.

InTheSnow Verdict

Les Gets blends authentic village charm with big-area skiing. It’s one of the best bases in the Portes du Soleil for families, with excellent ski schools, beginner zones, and off-slope activities, yet Mont Chéry adds steeper terrain for advanced skiers. The atmosphere is relaxed, the food culture strong, and access from Geneva makes it one of the most convenient French resorts.

For those who value authenticity, family-friendliness, and a more local flavour within a huge ski area, Les Gets is hard to beat.
