Andermatt is one of Switzerland’s most exciting ski destinations, blending traditional charm with bold modern investment. Once a quiet mountain village in the Uri Alps, Andermatt has been transformed in recent years thanks to major development by the Andermatt Swiss Alps project and Vail Resorts’ involvement. Set at 1,444 m, it offers access to 180 km of pistes across Andermatt–Sedrun–Disentis, linked by modern lifts and trains. The highlight is the Gemsstock (2,961 m), famous for its steep, freeride terrain and challenging pistes, balanced by gentler, family-friendly slopes in Sedrun and Disentis. Today, Andermatt combines authentic Swiss character with luxury hotels, world-class skiing, and freeride prestige, making it one of the most dynamic resorts in the Alps.

Skiing & Snowboarding

The Andermatt–Sedrun–Disentis ski area offers remarkable variety:

  • Beginners: Nursery slopes in Nätschen and Sedrun provide excellent learning terrain, with wide blues and modern lifts.
  • Intermediates: Long, scenic runs in Nätschen and Sedrun are perfect for confident cruisers, while Disentis offers quieter slopes with great mileage.
  • Experts: Gemsstock is legendary — steep black runs, off-piste bowls, and freeride lines make it a must for advanced skiers. With a guide, the freeride opportunities are among the best in Switzerland.
  • Freestylers: Small snowparks in Sedrun and Nätschen cater to freestyle skiers and snowboarders.

Snow reliability is excellent at Gemsstock, with its high altitude and north-facing slopes. Lower areas benefit from modern snowmaking.

Resort & Infrastructure

Andermatt has invested heavily in modern infrastructure:

  • Gemsstock is served by cable cars and chairs, with big vertical access.
  • The Matterhorn Gotthard Railway links Andermatt and Disentis, ski-in/ski-out via train.
  • Snowmaking ensures coverage on key pistes.

This combination of historic freeride terrain and modern infrastructure makes it unique among Swiss resorts.

Dining & Après

Mountain dining ranges from rustic Swiss huts on Gemsstock to family-friendly restaurants in Nätschen and Sedrun. Highlights include Restaurant Gurschen and Bergrestaurant Nätschen. In the village, Andermatt punches above its size for cuisine: Michelin-starred The Japanese by The Chedi offers world-class dining, while Restaurant Biselli and Gasthaus Tell serve hearty Swiss favourites. Après-ski is growing — Edelweiss Bar and Pinte are popular, while hotel lounges provide chic alternatives. It’s more refined than rowdy, in keeping with Andermatt’s luxury focus.

Non-Skiing Activities

Andermatt offers a good range of off-slope activities:

  • Winter hiking and snowshoe trails.
  • Cross-country skiing in the Ursern Valley.
  • Ice skating and curling in the village.
  • Spa and wellness at The Chedi Andermatt and Radisson Blu.
  • Railway excursions on the Glacier Express.

Village Character & Access

Andermatt is a traditional Swiss village transformed by modern investment. The old centre retains cobbled streets and chalets, while new developments add luxury hotels, apartments, and world-class facilities. The balance of history and modernity makes it stand out among Swiss resorts.   How to get there from the UK:

  • By air: Zurich Airport (2 hrs) is closest; Basel (2.5 hrs) and Milan (2.5 hrs) are alternatives.
  • By train: Direct rail from Zurich via Göschenen, then Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to Andermatt.
  • By car: Around 10 hrs from Calais.

InTheSnow Verdict

Andermatt is one of Switzerland’s most dynamic and versatile ski resorts. Once known only for its freeride gem, Gemsstock, it now offers a full 180 km ski area with modern lifts, luxury hotels, and authentic Swiss charm. While it may not yet rival Zermatt or Verbier for scale or nightlife, its mix of steep skiing, family-friendly terrain, and high-end facilities makes it a rising star of the Alps. For skiers seeking world-class freeride and luxury in a traditional setting, Andermatt is hard to beat.
