Canada and USA Snow Report and Forecast For Week Ending December 30th, 2017

Conditions are improving in the USA and Canada with fresh snow in most parts of the continent.

The only real exception has unfortunately been the two key ski states of Colorado and Utah which have had a mostly warm, dry December and are struggling to open many runs.  It’s turned colder now and snow is forecast, but, so far, not a lot.

California too needs snow but has at least had some.  Squaw Valley just got 5 inches/13cm.

The big snowfalls though are further north, in Alberta and BC, Canada as well as north westerly US states like Washintgton and Montana.  In fact Mt Baker in Washington state has had the most snowfall reported in the world so far – about 20 feet/6 metres since the start of the season.

Resorts in the region have had up to a metre of snow in the past three or four days.  Big White, pictured top and below, has had 35cm in 24 hours and 55cm so far this week.

But whistler Blackcomb is claiming the most open terrain in North America.  Thanks to over 4 metres of total snowfall this season, Whistler Blackcomb currently has 7400 acres of terrain open for skiers and riders heading into the holiday season.

There’s been more snow too down the Eastern side of North America where conditions are also looking good.

Temperatures here are well below freezing and bases have been building with Tremblant in Quebec issuing a powder alarm for 20cm of snow in 24 hours.
