The Tiroler Zugspitz Arena is a collection of seven ski areas on the Austrian side of the Zugspitze — Germany’s highest mountain (2,962 m). Located in northern Tirol, just 1 hr from Munich and Innsbruck, it offers 142 km of pistes, spread across resorts including Ehrwald, Lermoos, Biberwier, Berwang, Bichlbach, Heiterwang, and the Zugspitz Glacier.

This is one of Austria’s most family-friendly and accessible ski regions, with quiet slopes, authentic villages, and a relaxed pace. While it doesn’t have the scale or après-ski of Ischgl or Saalbach, it delivers charm, value, and a stunning alpine setting at the foot of the Zugspitze massif.

Skiing & Snowboarding

The Zugspitz Arena ski region offers variety across its local areas:

  • Beginners: Wide nursery slopes in Biberwier and Ehrwald are perfect for learners, supported by excellent ski schools. The calm atmosphere makes it ideal for children and first-timers.

  • Intermediates: Long, rolling blues and reds dominate, especially in Lermoos and Berwang, offering scenic cruising with mountain views.

  • Experts: While there are some steeper runs in Lermoos and Berwang, advanced skiers will find the main draw on the Zugspitz Glacier, with high-altitude pistes and freeride terrain. Off-piste opportunities exist with a guide.

  • Freestylers: Funparks in Ehrwald and Lermoos provide freestyle features, while natural terrain offers playful riding.

Snow reliability is excellent on the Zugspitz Glacier, while snowmaking ensures good coverage in the lower valley areas.

Dining & Après

On the mountain, rustic huts like Berggasthof Grubigalm (Lermoos) and SonnAlm (Ehrwald) serve hearty Tyrolean staples. The glacier restaurants offer panoramic dining with unbeatable views of the Zugspitze.

Après-ski here is relaxed rather than rowdy. Lermoos and Ehrwald have sociable bars, but nightlife is quiet compared to Ischgl or Sölden — more cosy evenings in hotel lounges than big parties.

Non-Skiing Activities

The Tiroler Zugspitz Arena is rich in alternatives for non-skiers:

  • The Zugspitze summit experience with its panoramic platform, igloo village, and Glacier Museum.
  • Winter hiking and snowshoeing across all villages.
  • Tobogganing runs in Ehrwald and Berwang.
  • Ice skating and curling.
  • Wellness in spa hotels.
  • Day trips to Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Innsbruck.

Village Character & Access

The Zugspitz Arena villages are authentic and traditional, with wooden chalets, baroque churches, and a welcoming Tirolean atmosphere. Ehrwald and Lermoos are the largest bases, while Biberwier and Berwang are quieter, ideal for families seeking peace.
