Japan’s Snow Festival

There are lots of reasons to go skiing in Japan of course – there’s that famously sensational snow as well as the less well publicised lovely locals and great food, plus currently a very favourable exchange rate.  But you can also tie in your ski trip with some of the stunning events that take place in Japan throughout the ski season.

One option is to aim for a spring visit when you can take in the world famous cherry blossom festivities, although timing is slightly fluid for those, depending on nature’s whims, and though the ski slopes stay open to May, the fluffy powder will most likely be past its best.

But one event you can take in whilst the snows at its best on the slopes takes place in the city where your flight lands when you’re heading to resorts like Niseko on the northern island of Hokkaido.

Japan’s Snow Festival

The Sapporo Snow Festival sees some of the most incredible, and huge, snow creations appear each February.

The exciting Festival is held within the Odori Koen Park in the heart of the city and is one of Japan’s largest winter events attracting two million people every year from at home and abroad .

During the seven day festival the park is transformed into a winter wonderland, with larger-than-life snow sculptures and ice statues dotting in the park grounds.
