Ski resorts that are open in to May in the Alps, North America and even Scotland are celebrating some more heavy snow falls over the past 48 hours which has left powder conditions on the slopes for skiers and boarders still able to head out to the resorts where ‘winter’ 15-16 is still on.  The snow follows substantial snowfalls a week ago and earlier in April.

In the Alps Engelberg, which will be open to May 22nd, has issued ‘powder alarms;’ for more than 20cm of fresh snow on its Titlis glacier for each of the past two days – reporting 20cm in the 24 hours to Sunday morning and a further 50cm this morning – a total of 70cm (or over two feet) over the weekend.  Many other areas are reporting 30-50cm of fresh snow including Austrian glaciers and Val Thorens (below) in France, open to May 8th.

There’s been snow down to resort level in ski areas such as St Anton and Kitzbuhel (which is open to May 1st).

In Scotland there are blizzard conditions today in the Scottish Highlands where two ski areas – Glencoe and Cairngorm – are still open for snowsports.  Cairngorm is reporting heavy snowfall and says it expects things will settle down by Wednesday.  Glencoe says Bank Holiday Monday May 2nd will be its last day of the season but Cairngorm has not announced a closing day yet.

Across the Atlantic there have been heavy snowfalls reported in California and Utah.  Squaw Valley which is open at least to the end of May reported over 50cm of fresh snow and Snowbird (Pictured top, picture credit Matt Crawley) , open long-weekends (Friday to Sunday) through May over a foot of fresh snow too.

April has proved to be a much snowier month than December was at many resorts.
