Heavy Snowfall In The Alps

It may only be the first few days of autumn but social media is awash with images of snowfall across the Alps this morning.

And we’ve had our first ‘powder alarm’ of the 2015-16 ski season with Solden, which has already opened for the season and will stage the northern hemisphere’s first World Cup races in just a month’s time, reporting 37cm of snow has fallen overnight.

Snowfall has been reported right across the Alps however with snowy images from France, Italy and Switzerland too.

Currently the number of areas open is at its lowest point of the year with ski centres operational still in single figures.  Besides Solden Hintertux and Pitztal in Austria as well as Saas Fee and Zermatt in Switzerland and Passo Stelvio in Italy are amongst those open.  Val Senales in Italy and the Stubai Glacier are scheduled to open this Friday.

Across the Atlantic there’s been snowy excitement too with again up to 15 inches of snow reported in the past few weeks and meteorologists suggesting it could be a very snowy winter thanks to a ‘strong El Nino’ weather pattern on the Pacific which associated with heavy precipitation.

Some UK newspapers have extended this normally West Coast North American weather factor to forecast Europe’s snowiest winter for six decades…
