It has been a challenging summer across the glaciers of the Alps with high temperatures melting snow cover and some summer ski centres having to suspend operations.
So far though Switzerland’s two summer ski options, Saas Fee and Zermatt, are still open with 50-60cm bases, topped up with a little fresh snow in August during a lull in the hot sunny weather
Saas Fee is pictured above and below after that fresh August snowfall brought 41cm of new summer snow.
Both centres have around 18km of slopes open each.
“Our glacier skiing is still going on, we are very lucky it is located at high altitude so it suffers less than lower located glaciers in the Alps,” said Valérie Perren of Zermatt’s lift company.
Until other Swiss glacier areas begin re-opening in October, those two will continue to be the open options in Switzerland through September – hopefully getting some fresh snow this month too.
