The hot summer in the Alps is having a knock-on effect on planned September openings on Italian glaciers.

Last month the Passo Stelvio summer ski area temporarily closed as the hot sun melted snow cover although it has no re-opened and will hopefully stay open through September.  The picture below was taken on 28th August.

Cervinia has also been open in August, but closes at the start of September until mid-October.

Not that there were that many planned to open in September, only Val Senales was the main September opening and they’ve announced they’ve having to delay until things cool down

“Due to the warm temperatures, the start of September ski training must be delayed until mid-September. As soon as the temperatures decrease we will announce the start of ski training on the glacier,” their statement reads.

Livigno, pictured top, did have temporary snow cover on the last weekend of August, but that was last season’s snow shipped in for a special event and has melted away now.
