Where To Ski or Board In Austria After Easter 2017

There’s been almost no fresh snow in Austria for a week – just a few areas like the Kaprun glacier reported 5-10cm of new snow at the end of last week.

But then it is approaching mid-April and about a third of Austria’s ski areas closed after last weekend or the on before, another third will close after the coming Easter weekend, so it’s only to be expected.

Austria does though, have a number of areas like Ischgl and Obertauern that stay open in to May, and more glacier ski areas than any other, several of which like the Stubai, Tux and Kitzsteinhorn above Kaprun (pictured top and below this week), which stay open to June, July or even later.

These are the places to ski now too as they have great spring skiing, hard packed first thing, perfect for 3-4 hours, then getting progressively stickier in the mid-late afternoon.

The glaciers have the best bases in the country with up to 2.2m of snow lying on them up high.
