Where To Ski or Board in Austria in August 2017?

There was fresh snow on Austrian glacier slopes in the last week of July – a cold front brought a few centimetres of snow to the slopes on July 24th.

Alas the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun had just ended its 10 month long ski season a few days before but the Hintertux (pictured top) and Molltal glaciers were both open for skiers and boarders to enjoy the snow.

This remains the case as we move in to August with six of Austria’s eight glacier areas currently closed – but likely to (almost) all open in the latter half of September, so long as conditions are good enough.

In fünf Monaten ist Weihnachten – bei uns hat es heute schon ein bisschen geschneit.

The Pitztal glacier posted video of its fresh snow – nothing it was arriving five months before Christmas Eve.

Currently the Molltal has the deeper snow base at 1.9m but only 3km of runs open.  Hintertux has a 1256cm base but 20km of runs open – one of the largest areas open in the world at present.
