As snowfall records continue to tumble in California a second resort has announced plans to stay open to at least July 4th

Squaw Valley says it, like Mammoth, will be open at least to the US Independence Day.  Mammoth (pictured above and below yesterday) has announced its intention to do so a month ago, offering free skiing on July 4th to anyone buying a lift ticket in January.

Mammoth currently has the world’s deepest snow base at just under 9 metres/30 feet on its upper slopes – one of the deepest snow bases reported by a leading resort anywhere in the world for several years.

Second Californian Ski Area Announces Season Extension to July 4th.

After a brief lull earlier this month the heavy snowfall has returned and Squaw Valley has received more than 2.1m (seven feet) of new snow since last Friday, Feb. 17, bringing the season total to 565 inches or 47 feet.  It has the second deepest snow base in the world at 6.4m (21 feet).

The ‘average snowpack’ in California is also reported to be at its deepest for more than two decades

Mammoth has previously stayed open in to August for snow sports but not for many years.
