Artistic Avalanche Exhibition

An artistic exhibition on the theme of avalanches –  their power, dynamics and their unexpected nature – is to be staged in Gstaad, Switzerland this winter by British curator Neville Wakefield and Swiss artist Olympia Scarry.

The exhibition will launch over the weekend of 3-5 February 2017 and will feature an international programme of music, performance and sound installations.

“Offsetting the ephemeral and transitive nature of these performances will be a number of monumental sculptural and site-specific interventions created by renowned artists from around the globe,” a statement on behalf of the organisers reads.

The exhibition is the latest in a series known as Elevation 1049. First launched in 2014 this features  site-specific exhibitions created out of the specifics of time and place, curated by Wakefield and  Scarry and taking place in and above Gstaad.

Elevation 1049 is comprised of work by international artists and as the title suggests, most of the work is displayed outside, positioned in and defined by the landscape they inhabit.

Participating artists so far include: Allora & Calzadilla, Douglas Gordon, Yngve Holen, Ryoji Ikeda, Ellen LeBlond-Schrader, Sarah Morris, Thomas Schütte, Superflex, Tatiana Trouve, and Nicole Wermers, amongst others.

“Held in the midst of winter, Elevation 1049 exchanges the confines of the white cube for the expansive snow-covered backdrop of the Alpine landscape. Using elevation is the measure of difference each project, in different ways, marks the separation of earth and sky, of heaven and hell. Tracing the contours of what lies underfoot and our aspirations above,” the statement conbtinues.

Elevation 1049 is supported by the LUMA Foundation, the founding patrons and a number of additional private donors.
