A New Ski Destination Choice in Lapland

Crystal Ski Holidays have added another ski area in Lapland, northern Finland, to their portfolio for winter 2018/19

The internationally little known resort of Suomu opened in 1965 and has a scattering of ski slopes along with a selection of activities to complete a winter adventure holiday north of the Arctic Circle.

There are 13km of groomed ski runs, with a mix of green, blue, red and black slopes. Beginners in particular will be well taken care of – the nursery area is right next to the hotel, and there are some longer gentle runs to help with progression.

Off the slopes, there are plenty of activities to get stuck into: snowmobile safaris through the forest are popular and searching for the Northern Lights. Alternatively resort guests can follow the locals and unwind in a sauna. There are also 75km of cross-country tracks, some of them illuminated, to explore in untamed nature.

Suomu has no main town, so off-slope life centres around the Hotel Suomutunturi, only metres from the lifts. It has a restaurant, bar and a small shop.  Accommodation is provided either in a hotel room or there’s the option to stay in a log cabin 1.5km away which have a herd of reindeer rather than a ski slope in the field right next door.

A week’s stay at the three-star Hotel Suomuntunturi costs from £699 per person (two sharing) including half board, based on flights from Gatwick to Kuusamo departing 27 January 2019 and transfers with, unusually, lift passes are included in the holiday package.
