The ski touring craze is going from strength to strength with a growing number of skiers and snowboarders heading into the back country for off-piste solitude – and there is no place better to do so than Isère. In 2021, Isère began to initiate a policy of structuring ski touring, which would gradually come into effect over a two year period. Part of this project involves setting up counting units at the start of the marked routes, to monitor the number of skiers and snowboarders. It also includes creating breaks in the route for people to join or leave, secure zones and a rescue service, and an avalanche triggering plan if necessary. 12 pilot ski areas have set up 33 ski touring routes this winter, which are permanent, signposted, and secured trails, suitable for all levels. These include the resorts of Alpe d’Huez, Oz en Oisans, Vaujany, Les 2 Alpes, Chamrousse, Villards des Lans and Les Sept Laux.

Isère is offering free ski touring initiation workshops supervised by experienced professionals, with prior online registration. Make the most of a trip to Isère with a stay at Ski France’s  Chalet Le Manoir. Le Manoir sleeps 12 guests across six bedrooms and boasts a hot tub and sauna as well as free Wi-Fi throughout the chalet, a cosy open fire and comfortable sofas in the living area. Avoriaz is at an altitude of 1,800 m, meaning great snow fall and plenty of sunshine all season long. The town centre is completely pedestrianised and has an impressive array of boutique shops and superb restaurants, with horse drawn carriages, snowcats and skis as your only means of transportation. Much loved by seasoned experts, the resort is also popular with first time skiers, with an extensive beginner area that includes slopes in the village itself as well as lots of easy green pistes and lifts on the way to the gondola down to Morzine.
