It’s Snowing In The Alps (And Most Other Ski Areas In the Northern Hemisphere)

Substantial snowfall has been reported in almost all of the world’s main northern hemisphere ski regions over the past 48 hours.

The fresh snow is particularly welcome in the Alps, bringing to an end two weeks pf clear sunny skies and warm temperatures for the last fortnight of winter – which felt more like mid-spring.

But as spring started on Friday the snow started falling and hundreds of resorts in the Austrian, French, German, Italian and Swiss Alps have been reporting accumulations, generally of 20-30cm, over the weekend.

There’s been snow in the Pyrenees, Dolomites, Scandinavia, Scotland and across North America too.

Some of the biggest falls of the past 24 hours have been reported in the Swiss alps with Klosters, St Moritz and Wengen all reporting around 40cm in 24 hours.

Most of the big name resorts in French Alps have reported big snowfalls too – Avoriaz, Alpe d’Huez, Flaine, La Plagne and Val Thorens all reported at least a foot (30cm) if new snow since yesterday.

In Italy Cervinia reported 40cm, Sauze d’Oulx 20cm.

Low elevation resorts in the Austrian Tirol including Kitzbuhel have had a much needed foot of snow – this was one of the areas where the thaw had been most evident.  Ischgl and Obergurgl reported 20cm each.
