In Switzerland there are four glacier areas open for the first week of May, three of which make it through to the final weekend and one that stays open year round for snowsports anyway.
There has also been fresh snow to end April meaning May skiing is looking good – Zermatt, the year-round ski resort with Europe’s highest run and biggest summer-skiing vertical – reported 20cm of fresh snow on the last Tuesday/Wednesday of April.

Also open in May are the glacier ski areas of Engelberg in central Switzerland (Pictured top after fresh snow on April 26th) and Diavolezza in the Engadin region, close to St Moritz. Its spring skiing is one of the ski world’s open secrets with a wonderful long descent and stunning views accessed by cable car.
Glacier 3000 near Gstaad, which has the deepest snow base in Europe this winter at over 4.5 metres/15 feet, is also open but only for the first week of May this year the centre’s operators say.
