Schneetag

Pond skimming events are popular as end of season events at ski areas around the world, but some add a bit of extra fun by suggesting participants build a craft in which to hit the water rather than just trying to ski or board across.

Such is Schneetag (pronounced Sch-knee Tog) event that’s back for its seventh incarnation this Sunday, April 12th at the bottom of Aspen Highlands in Colorado.

Schneetag is the German word for “snow day”. Put simply, this translates to “daredevils willing to propel themselves with reckless abandon down a hill, over a jump and across a pond on a raft they built themselves.”

Teams of four create a makeshift raft they will pilot down a slope and attempt to float across a 75 by 20 foot pond.  To further add to the hilarity, each team will present a theme and perform a skit before they descend. Creates quite a picture doesn’t it?

Another perk of this wonderful event is that it’s free so even if you don’t want to throw yourself into some James Bond type stunt work, you can watch from the sidelines and judge other people’s genius attempts.
