Whistler Extends Ski Season In To June

Whistler has announced it will keep the ski lifts running for another three weeks, to the first weekend in June.

The extension to Sunday June 7th extends the ski season from its original closing date, this Sunday May 17th.

Whistler say they’ve had good snowfall over the past six weeks including 60cm (2 feet) of fresh snow in April, and more snow in early May.

It means the resort’s nearly seven month winter season will end less than two weeks before their dive week summer glacier ski season is due to commence on Saturday 20th June.

In previous years though Whistler’s winter and summer season dis often more-or-less run in to each other anyway.

Whistler has not had a record snowfall ski season but has managed to keep operating when other ski areas in BC and south of the border in states like Oregon, Washington and California were forced to close during the season due to warm weather.

Most notable was Mt Baker in Washington state which holds the world records for the most snow in a season and for average annual snow at around 50 feet, but it was forced to close in March due to lack of cover.

Mt Bachelor in Oregon which is often open in to June and had previously said it hoped to stay open to the US Memorial Day holiday at the end of May closed at the weekend – its earliest closure for 38 years.
