Engelberg’s famous rotating cable car, the Rotair, is no more. But the good news is that it is due to be replaced next winter by a new, better, rotating cable car.

The Rotair, which opened in 1992, was the first cable car in the world to have a Rotating floor, meaning that as it ascended to the glaciated peak of Mt Titlis, passengers were gradually taken through a 360 degree panorama of the scenic majesty below.

The lift rapidly became an iconic symbol of Engelberg,

Since it opened a few others have been built, although not in ski resorts, as have several gondolas with rotating gondola cabins.

“The new Rotair will have more glass, so our guests can see much better the beautiful panorama.,” said Engelberg’s Dominik Ettlin, “Also new is, that the whole cabin will rotate, not only the floor as in the old one.”

Engelberg say that it has also started to build a new gondola lift this summer, which will go directly up to Stand, where the Rotair begins it’s ascent.

The new gondola will be much faster and more comfortable when it opens for winter 2015-16.
