As part of an international celebration of snow, CairnGorm Mountain celebrated World Snow Day at the end of last month, by introducing 50 first-timers to skiing and snowboarding free-of-charge as part of a competition to mark the event.
World Snow Day was designated by the International Ski Federation, with ski resorts all round the world encouraged to participate and, in particular, to find ways of getting newcomers onto skis or boards for the first time.

The winners, whose ages ranged from 8 to 58, came to the resort near Aviemore from all over Scotland to get their first taste of snow sports, under the experienced tuition of instructors from The Ski and Snowboard School.

Among the youngest winners were brothers Finlay (8) and Struan (11) Morrison from Inverness. Their instructor, Martin Amos, commented that the boys were learning quickly, and their mother was impressed by the progress they made in one lesson. This view was reflected by many other participants who said they loved it and wanted to come back.
