Snowmaking Underway at Loveland, Colorado

As the second autumn storm of the week brought new snow to Loveland Ski Area in Colorado, one of the world’s 15 highest ski areas and traditionally one of the first non-glacier ski areas in the world to open, the US ski area took advantage of the cold temperatures and started making snow for the 2013-2014 ski season. The snowmaking team turned the snowguns on at 6pm on Friday, September 27 and complimented the natural snowfall with some manmade flakes of their own.

Loveland’s snowmaking crew will work their way down three runs to create a top-to-bottom run that is over a mile in length and nearly 1,000 vertical feet.

“The surrounding peaks have been white all week and it is great to see our snowmaking team push the snow line a little further down the mountain,” said John Sellers, marketing director. “Every flake that falls from the sky or from one of our snow guns gets us that much closer to Opening Day. We look forward to turning the lifts for all the skiers and snowboarders that have patiently made it through another long summer.”

It typically takes two to three weeks for Loveland’s snowmaking team to cover the top-to-bottom run with an 18 inch base and tree-to-tree coverage for Opening Day. Loveland started making snow on October 4 last season and opened on October 23. Loveland Ski Area plans to open in mid-October.
