Big snowfalls have been reported in Western Canada, with the grainy image above showing deep powder lying at the top of the slopes yesterday at Panorama resort in British Columbia.
Heavy snowfall at altitude is not unusual in late summer and early autumn although it can feel strange to see it – last week several glacier ski areas that were offering summer skiing reported big snowfalls too. The Mollltal glacier in Austria was one of the big winners with over a foot of fresh snow falling.
Last year there were big snowfalls in Washington State at this time of year, leading several areas to open briefly, one running its lifts for free, but the snow melted soon afterwards.
Snow has been reported in many resorts in Western North America today and excitement is particularly palpable at high areas like Loveland in Colorado which usually starts snow making in September and aims to open by mid-October.
Conditions are still good in the southern hemisphere too where for many areas September is the last month of the 2014 ski season. There’s been heavy snow reported in Argentina and Chile in recent days and Australian areas are still in good shape after heavy snowfall in July which has received regular top ups since.
