Actor Bruce Willis has decided to give away the ski resort he owns, Soldier Mountain in Idaho, as part of a move to divest himself of property in and around the towns of Fairfield and Hailey which he has owned since the time of his marriage to Demi Moore.

Soldier Mountain is a small area with four lifts, a 430m vertical and 700 acres of terrain. Additional Snowcat skiing opening up a vertical of nearly 800 metres is available in the region on a further 1500 acres leased from the US Forest Service.

Soldier Mountain’s base lodge had been destroyed by fire in March 2009 but Willis had quickly had it re-built.

Willis is selling the bar and theatre he owns in Fairfield for more than $20m but decided to give the ski area to the citizens of Fairfield. A non-profit group has been formed to take over the mountain after Willis had visited in the Spring to discuss the ownership changes at Soldier Mountain at a meeting in the town hall.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the organisation that will be responsible for the management of Soldier Mountain Ski Area,” Willis told the Idaho Statesman. “It was exciting to see that the very people who ski at Soldier care so much about its future. I wish them the very best.”
