New Cherry Peak Ski Resort Opens In Utah

A new ski resort has opened this season in Utah. The opening of Cherry Peak, located near the town of Richmond up near the Idaho state line, represents a rare thing in the skiing world these days.

Although there are more than 4,000 existing ski areas in Europe and North America, it’s unusual for a new one to open on either continent these days – most of the world’s new ski areas open in Asia, although some still do in the far eastern parts of Europe. Cherry Peak, which has been planned for more than a year and is running a year late, having planned to open for winter 2014/15, appears to have chosen a good season to start running its lift, with excellent early-season snowfalls in Utah. Snowbird, one of the state’s largest ski areas, reported the biggest accumulation in the world last week, with 1.2m of new snow. The ski area is opening with four lifts including three triple chairs (one of which won’t open until next season as it’s still being installed) and a 170m-long carpet lift for the beginner area.
