Despite the ongoing ‘economic slowdown’ and the 12 hour flight just to reach Tokyo, Japanese destinations seem to be becoming ever more popular with Brits, and more tour operators are offering more choice in the country this winter than ever before.

The latest to announced an expanded programme is Ski safari which has two new resorts on Japan’s main island of Honshu, in Nagano – easily accessible from Tokyo.

Hakuba Valley is one of Japan’s largest ski areas, suitable for all levels and with access to five mountains – one of which was host to the men’s and women’s Downhill race in the 1998 Winter Olympics. Stay at the Sierra Resort Hotel, a beautiful retreat located between the two largest ski hills (Happo-One and Tsugaike) that has a fantastic restaurant.

Nozawa Onsen is a traditional Japanese village, tucked away at the foot of the mountain from where a day trip to see the snow monkeys is a must. Stay at the newly-opened Jon Nobi hotel, offering a blend of traditional and contemporary décor with Japanese-style tatami mat rooms, private hot spring baths and a chic Manhattan-esque bar.

Bathing in hot springs (onsen) is a traditional part of the Japanese skiing experience that can be enjoyed at both resorts, each of which offers indoor and outdoor hot spring pools.

A seven-night trip to Japan this season starts from £1,390 pp including scheduled return flights, transfers and accommodation, whilst a ten-night trip costs from £1,530 pp (both based on four people travelling).
