Heavy April Snowfall in The Rockies and The Alps

It may be the latter half of April but there have been some heavy snowfalls reported on both sides of the Atlantic.

The biggest accumulation over the last 72 hours has been at Loveland in Colorado (pictured above) which reported 75cm (30 inches).  Nearby Arapahoe basin picked up half that total in 24 hours.

Most US area have now closed but several dozen are still operating including Breckenridge for one more week and Copper which will re-open next weekend in Colorado.  In California Mammoth, Squaw and Sugarbowl are all still operating.

Only a few hundred areas are open in the Alps still but they’ve reported big accumulations too, much of it in the past 24 hours.  On the Austrian glaciers Hintertux has had 50cm and Austria’s highest slopes on the Pitztal got 40cm since yesterday, the same total as the Stubai.

Ischgl, which is open for another fortnight, had a foot of fresh snow in  the last 24 hours, as did Obergurgl and St Anton.  In Italy Livigno has had 40cm on upper runs, 20cm in resort at 1800m and most other open areas in the Alps are also reporting big snowfalls.

In France 25cm of fresh snow has been reported by La Clusaz and Avoriaz.

There’s also been new snow in Scotland where Glencoe and Cairngorm are still open.

All in all April is looking a much snowier month than December was.
