Fresh Snow for the Pyrenees

Patrick Thorne

23 Mar 17

The Pyrenees have enjoyed one of the best seasons for a winter (and now spring) that has been less than perfect across most of Europe.

The southern mountains have had more consistent snowfalls over the past five months and most ski areas have built up good bases ahead of the final month or so of the 16-17 season.

Overnight many ski areas in the French Pyrenees have posted accumulations of 20-30cm (8-12 inches) including at Cauterets (pictured above) and Peyragudes (video below).

The snow is now moving in to Andorra where up to 50cm is forecast over the next 48 hours at the area’s biggest ski area, Grandvalira.

6cm of snow has fallen here already today and snow tyres or chains are currently required on vehicles heading up to the French border at Pas de la Casa.

In most areas of the French Pyrenees it’s expected to be mostly dry again tomorrow but then up to 30cm more snow is expected on Saturday.
