Thanks to a good snowfall season, Banff’s Sunshine Village resort has decided to open its Wild West Freeride Zone this week for the first time since 2014.

The Wild West is known for some of the most extreme in-bounds terrain in North America. Conditions will be reviewed daily and opening of the terrain will be considered on a day-to-day basis. For updates, the new Banff Sunshine app is a useful tool.

“March continues to deliver the goods in Banff National Park, with milder temperatures and new snow every day for the last 7 days,” said a spokesperson for the area.

‘Milder’ in Canadian terms normally does not mean ‘Spring-like’ as used in the UK for conditions that are often too warm by lunchtime, but merely that it’s no longer double digits below zero so nicer to be outdoors.

The three Banff resorts of Mt Norquay, The Lake Louise Ski Resort and Sunshine Village have each received between 60cm-101cm of fresh powder since the start of the month, with more in the forecast this week.
